why i love my life and why shaved heads don't equal crazy

again with the lists. this time a scanned version of my usual gratitude-fest.

and seriously, why does the media equate shaved heads with being crazy? i'm in no way trying to defend britney spears, but i'm really getting sick of everyone talking about how she's crazy just because she shaved her damn head. i shaved my head many-a-times before (my husband shaved it the first time) and i'm not crazy (cough cough!). many of you have asked for visual proof that i did in fact shave my head. here's a photo of my not-so-newly shaved head, during a solo-cross-country trip during the college years:

i'm not saying it looks good. i'm just saying i wasn't crazy.

You are SO right!!! Why does it have to equal crazy if a girl were to shave her head??? I, too, am a previously shaven girl. I wore it that way for two years. My own mother questioned my sanity...bah...I've even considered going back to it, but my honey does prefer to see me with SOME hair LOL

It feels invigorating to cut your hair off- fresh new start. I agree, not crazy- otherwise my husband is a nut job since he has had his head shaved since we met... and why is it okay for men but not woman, yet we are supposed to shave every other portion of our body- ack! don't get me started.

I agree, shaved doesn't equal crazy. The girl definately has issues, but look at her life. I have mucho issues, and I never lived like she has.
I have day dreamed about shaving my head...I wish I had the nerve to do it. It has to feel so freeing (that's not a word, but u know what I mean bean.)

I really want to try it someday! But wait a minute, I am crazy. I guess that doesn't help your case.

Looks great on you!

check out dooce(dot)com to see her take on the britney fiasco... why hasn't anyone in the media thought of post-partum depression?

i do remember my mom's first reaction when my best friend shaved her head, "was she raped? because i've heard that women that shave their heads have been raped?" silly mom, some people just get tired of hair!

Very interesting post...I have never dramatically altered my hair, but I whenever I do get it cut feel like a complete shift in energy takes over. I think as I get older, I may play even more (reversed order from most folks, but whatever). I love the idea of being a granny who has blue hair one day, red the next, wigs on Saturday nights, and long silver braids when I'm working in the garden on Sunday. Fun-fun...your handwritten list was a treat.
Love,
D.

Every time I hear the words "shaved head" I think of Chris Spielman. He's was an OSU football player, and later, for the Detroit Lions. He's my neighbor now, and when his wife found out she had breast cancer, he shaved his head. They both stood on a podium, with shaved heads, and gave a gratitude speech for all the love they received.

you've got a point. you do look good though and it probably is very liberating to have your hair that short. and this from someone whose hair is very short!!

Hey Nina,
Hmm, I don't remember that and I met you in college! I remember you with short hair though. I think I remember Heather M saying something about you shaving your head. Was it between junior and senior year? Anyway, you look [ed] great. I've been wanting to do that for years! Also, congrats on being interviewed!! Now I know someone famous ;) !!

I shaved my head too a while back, and it is definitely not a "crazy" thing to do. In fact, it is quite brave to take a look at who you are and what society has to say about you. Thank you for sharing.

i recently saw a woman at a coffee shop with a buzz cut and was inspired. she looked beautiful. i havn't been able to stop thinking about shaving my head since. does anyone have any words of wisdom, though? my concerns about shaving my head are as follows:
-what if my head is shaped strangely?
- my hair is strawberry blonde... i'm wondering if a shaved head doesn't look good with light hair?
- is the process of growing one's hair back a pain? i feel like there would be a long while when the length would be unmanageable and not look good.
anyone have responses?
i understand that the point of shaving one's head is to feel free in many cases, but for me to shave my head, i would need to feel like i could look good too.
