my boobs aren't invincible

holy hot titty, i've gone and got myself a serious case of mastitis.

my boobies, in fact, are not invincible after all.

after years of nursing and pulling and head-butting and being slung up and down and pressed and bit and all that jazz, my nearly-weaned left one is hot, swollen, and bothered. r.e.a.l.l.y. bothered. so bothered, in fact, that i carted me and my cranky, teething one year old over to a clinic in order to be flirted with in the waiting room by a man of questionable mental integrity. (he reeeeaaaaaaly liked my scarf and earrings and everything else, by the way. he also whipped out his wallet and showed me some pictures. holy self-confession, why do i attract these weirdos?!?) anywho, i whipped out the boobers to a stranger-doctor, only to be made to feel badly about quitting cold turkey. "it's not best for the breast to do it that way!" ok sister, it's best for me, and it's a done deal, so can you just feel up my sad boober and let me be on my way? my son is getting a glimpse of the missed goodies and it's not a good thing. needless to say, i've got a serious case of crazy-milk-duct-blockage, something i've never dealt with before. i literally found myself saying to the doctor, "i'm not a boob-pain wimp, but this is PAIN". so i actually filled a prescription for antibiotics, even though my better judgement tells me NO. no hot packs or massage or all those other trickies have works. so here i go, choking down the horsie pills, hoping the titters are feeling fine again soon.

i'd post a picture, but i figured i'd spare you all. :)

It's taking all of my effort not to say I told ya so. But seriously, missy - I'm SO SO sorry for your boobie pain. Huge hugs! Can I bring something over? Cabbage leaves?

I'm laughing, so sorry, but laughing at this post. You poor thing, I remember this all too well. I could hardly lift my arms over my head and I didn't even have an infection. The smell got me, it was horrible. I showered with a double bra on for like 4 days too! Memories of what we do for the loved ones. Why don't men have to deal with any of this again???????

Ouch, Ouch, Ouch. My boobies hurt just reading this. Not to sound weird, but I'll be thinking of you & your sore boob. :)

My friend just went cold turkey and she had the same problem. The docs wanted to do something drastic like put in some drainage, but she looked up online and found something about looking for a small metallic-looking blister on her breast. I'm not sure if it was the areola or what, but she opened it up with a pin and a bunch of milk came out. She was in instant relief. Sounds weird, but she's pretty savvy with health things. She was the one that recommended putting grated potato in my bra when I had mastitis, and it worked.

I hope you feel better soon. I do not envy you. I do not even need a picture because I remember the eggplant attached to my body very well. I know you don't like meds, but I promise you will feel better in less than 48 hours!!!

xoxoxo,
Steph

You poor thing! If I was there, I'd massage them (yes, I've been trained and am a CMT for all you readers who might find this creepy). Feel better, lover muffin.

I was the mastitis queen when I was breastfeeding, I got it more than five times, I lost track. Good luck and take care, I am sure you have all the remedies you need (yay cabbage leaves!):)
Any weaning that makes the baby and the Mama happy (despite ouchie boobays) is a good weaning.
Oh and ANY time I get hit on now, I take it as a compliment!

I've been there--oh yes, and I am so sorry to hear about it because it flat out sucks! I hope you heal up fast...keep resting and don't feel guilty for the antibiotics. You know you wouldn't have taken them unless you REALLY needed them, so you are an aware patient, no need to beat yourself up (especially when you're already aching so badly!)
Love,
D.

Oh, this is soooo not nice! Here you go and do what you are sure is the right thing and look what happens. As awful as those horse pills are...I have a feeling that they will get you back to normal (read NO PAIN) soon! Poor you...and the girls. They have worked hard and provided lots of nurishment and love. :-) I hope that you and them are feeling in tip-top form very very soon!!!!!

I know your pain. Take care of yourself. As Moms, we forget, or don't realize how sick we really are. REST!

oh god, i'm laughing so hard over here. NOT at your pain, sister, never. thank goodness i only ever had a plugged duct.
your writing sounds just as if we were talking and i can only imagine cracking up while hearing the account in person. then i come to comments where "crikey" and "jugs" the first eye catchers and now i just can't handle it. i'm just weaned too, and in a bath with babe last night, "missed goodies" was the topic on the table.
oh, nina. you slay me. jesus. write a book or something.
