locks of love

so a little bit of the backstory to this self portrait creepy april unfools tuesday. i found out my cousin's girlfriend, who is only 18, found a huge lump in her hip (malignant cancer) and tests showed she also has cancer in her bone marrow, and now her lungs. only 18! my cousin had an engagement ring for her previously and when this all came out a couple of weeks ago he asked her to marry him. i can't stop thinking about their story...how the world is such a crazy place, how sometimes people take their health for granted, etc. etc. i obsessed. i decided to just go for it and chop off my hair and donate it because it was the only thing that i could do. locks of love actually deals primarily with kids with alopecia, but it will hopefully be put to good use. it's just hair. i feel so much lighter without it. and even when i look in the mirror and don't feel so hot with my new short hair, and my daughter's calling me a trainwreck, i still can feel good because i know it was the only thing i could do.

this story is so sad and inspiring all at the same time. regarding trainwrecks -- better to be a trainwreck then a rusty ol' train stopped dead in its tracks. you reminded me today to take more risks, especially risks motivated by love.
I can't believe she called your hair a trainwreck...ug... From what I see it's cute, I love short hair and I'm sure it looks awesome on you!!
OH MY GOD, what a sad sad sad sad sad story. I'm so sorry to hear that. I think what you did is beautiful...and I'm sure it looks beautiful no matter what gracie says. She is just jealous of her mom!!!
xoxox,
Steph

not to bring up a sad subject again, but i actually found these photos inspiring. very sad, but certainly full of life. and your willingness to do something, anything is moving to the point of tears. no matter what your hair looks like, you're beautiful all the same.
your new hair looks funky and cool (in your previous post).
you have a big beautiful heart.
good for you...what a great way to help others...and i am sure your hair feels so good now!!! :)
Blogging pays! But is messy.
Last Oct. in this space Ms. Gilbert asked if anyone could recommend a bubble bath that wouldn't cause urinary irrit'n in Grace (she'd had a UTI), but would meet Grace's exacting standards on bubbles. I hit that in a search, then searched for Ms. Gilbert's physical address & phone no., and found out she already had a brand (undisclosed). No matter; I challenge that brand to a suds-off in Grace's baths! And sent off a sample of my formula today -- http://users.bestweb.net/~robgood/lather.html if others of you are interested.
But it's messy in the sense that if I try to put a comment back in October when the inquiry was posted, probably nobody will read it, while here (where it's off topic), someone might.
